Project Profile

The problem

  • Kelly Upchurch had an ambitious vision: opening a network of adult day care centers across rural Kentucky, where such services were few and far between. But Upchurch, a psychologist with extensive experience in the field of rehabilitation, needed financing to get started and access to business expertise to keep going.

The strategy

  • He was referred to Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation (KHIC), which in part is supported by LISC’s Rural program. KHIC provided Upchurch with a $75,000 equity investment and $15,000 working capital loan, allowing him to open the Clinton Adult Day Health Care Center in his hometown of Albany.

The result

  • In the next three years, Upchurch opened adult day care centers in four other towns. Together, the centers employ more than 50 people from the communities where they are located, and serve 150 participants a day.
